Born in 1933 in Chicago,
Howard Behrens did not start to paint until the age of seventeen when he broke
his leg in a sledding accident. He received his BA degree from The University
Of Maryland and went on to study medical art at John Hopkins University where
he became disillusioned, and returned to The University Of Maryland to obtain
a Masters degree in painting and sculpture.
In 1961, Behrens was
hired by The United States Government Printing Office in Washington, D.C.,
where he worked as chief artist until 1981. It was during this period that
Behrens experimented and developed his palette knife technique.
In 1980, Behrens had
his first one-man show in West Palm Beach, Florida. He sold his paintings
for $1,500 to $3,200 each.
Five years later his
paintings were selling for $10,000 each. Behrens inspiration comes mainly
from his extensive travels. "It seems the warm climates and bright sunlight
affected my style and choice of subject matter significantly.
"Behrens presents a world
of physical beauty -- bathed in sunlight and touched by soft sea breezes --
a world that creates in the viewer’s imagination a pleasant, warm escape."
